Manual Math: How to Calculate Duration Between Two Times
While our duration calculator is instant, knowing the manual method is useful. Calculating the duration between two times can be a little tricky depending on the numbers of minutes and seconds in the two times being compared.
Here are the steps to calculate hours and minutes manually:
Convert to 24-Hour Time: If the times are not already in 24-hour format, convert them. AM hours remain the same. For PM hours, add timing of 12 to the number. For example, 1:00 PM becomes 13:00.
Compare Minutes: Determine whether the number of minutes is larger in the starting time or the ending time.
Scenario A (Ending Minutes are Larger): If the ending time has more minutes, subtract the start from the end normally. Keep hours on the left of the “:” and minutes on the right.
Example: 13:57 – 9:22 = 4:35.
Scenario B (Starting Minutes are Larger): This requires borrowing. Treat the hour and minute portions separately. Add 60 to the minutes of the ending time and subtract 1 hour from the ending hour.
Example: To calculate 13:57 – 9:58, you modify the first time to 12:117 (13 minus 1 hour, 57 plus 60 minutes).
Calculation: 12:117 – 9:58 = 3:59.
